Q: I can’t stand my BFF’s boyfriend. Can I tell her how I feel, or do I have to just keep my mouth shut?
A: That’s a tough one. Unfortunately, we don’t get to pick who our favorite people fall for, and sometimes those chosen are serious douche-berries. Anna G gave some great advice a few months back on how to deal with the hatred welling up inside of you, but if you feel the need to act, remember the following:
1. Only speak up if there is a real problem. You hating on his annoying habits/friends/face isn’t reason enough to sound the alarm if this person makes your friend truly happy. If his behavior is abusive or is genuinely bringing your friend down, it’s time to speak up.
2. That’s what you’re there for. At times, it is the BFF’s job to slap some sense into that love-blinded head. As long as you have your friend’s best interest at heart, your intentions will be obviously supportive and not malicious.
3. Prepare for the shit storm. Know that your well-meaning advice may not be received as such. Be ready for potential awkwardness and maybe even a falling out, but know that she will eventually see the wisdom of your words (though it might take her three kids-too-long to figure it out).
