After 1989: Race After Multiculturalism with Das Racist, Ego Trip Mag, Racialicious and More!

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

What better way to spend a Monday night than examining race and multiculturalism in the “politically correct” atmosphere of the 90s with a goldmine of cultural thinkers. Described as “part symposium, part late night talk show, part Youtube nostalgia-fest,” After 1989: Race After Multiculturalism is a five-part project brought to you by The Asian American Writers’ Workshop.

Tonight’s event, What Do We Talk About When We Talk About Race, will feature a little “racist show-and-tell” with Das Racist and Ego Trip Magazine, a discussion of the American literary canon with National Book Foundation Executive Director Harold Augenbraum, and an interview with Latoya Peterson of Racialicious on how “the Internet has unleashed the Pandora’s Box of racial discourse” amongst other things. Check the After 1989 Tumblr for upcoming events, and get ready to cry-laugh (or laugh-cry) as you put on your deconstructionist thinking caps and ponder 90s nostalgia in a new way.

Tiara Francis - NY Know-it-all

Tiara was born in NYC, raised in NJ, and after studying Comp Lit at Columbia, vowed to never go back to the suburbs. While she has expensive taste, she also has shallow pockets and is always looking for a budget way to be a weekend warrior. Her hobbies include laughing way too loudly, putting hot sauce on/in everything - including margaritas - speaking French at inappropriate moments, and dancing like there’s no one else in da club.
