Win Tickets to See Dave Eggers Receive the 21st Century Visionary Award
I was in college when A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius came out. For some reason I had to read it for a class on 20th Century art movements that was taught by a woman who was slowly unraveling. While the class was totally shitty and poorly taught, one awesome thing came out of it: the teacher brought Dave Eggers down to Santa Cruz to talk to the class. Afterwards, one of the other students hosted a potluck for everyone, and I remember the teacher’s obsessive gushing over Dave being so overwhelming that he was pretty uncomfortable with the whole thing. We all were.
I ran into Dave on Valencia a few months back and reminded him about the whole incident and we both laughed about how completely bizarre it was. Afterwards I realized that I forgot to tell him what happened to my copy of A Heartbreaking Work. My friend Katie got really drunk one night while visiting and she ended up puking all over it. For some reason I have a feeling he’d get kick out of that. I know I would.
If you’ve lived in San Francisco for awhile you also probably have some kind of Dave Eggers story. If not Thursday night is your chance to get one because INFORUM at the Commonwealth Club will be hosting him for a conversation about how to provide fair access to higher education at the Herbst Theatre. They’ll also be awarding him the 21st Century Visionary Award. The event will be very much a “in conversation with” style event.
And guess what? I’m giving out a pair of tickets for FREE! Oooh la la! If you’d like to win please email Contests@BrokeAssStuart.com with “Dave Eggers” as the title. The winner will be randomly chosen and entrants will be added to our email list.
Otherwise Tickets are $25 standard, $15 members; Premium seating: $45 standard, $30 members, $10 students for all categories (with valid ID). They can be purchased here.
Do you have a good Dave Eggers story? If so leave it in the comments!
