The Awesomest Stoner Movies

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Ok, potheads, you made it to your Hashish Holiday, Happy Marijuanikah! Take a load off, turn the boob tube on and sink into your couch with a joint or twelve as you take a toke into these classic stoner movies.

Cheech and Chong Up In Smoke – Enjoy some OG Kush with the OG of all marijuana movies. Follow two stoners as they unknowingly smuggle a van, entirely made of weed, from Mexico to L.A. Unbeknownst to them they have the incompetent, and lizard loving, Sgt. Stedenko on their trail.

Half Baked – A true best buds comedy, three stoners must sell stolen weed to bail their buddy out of jail. Dave Chappelle and Jim Breuer wrote and star in this chronic comedy. Mr. Nice Guy will have you shouting Butterstuff! Butternuts! Buttercup! at a cop’s horse.

Pineapple Express – Undoubtedly this decade’s best mar-com (marijuana comedy), a dealer (James Franco) and his favorite customer (Seth Rogen) become the best of friends when they wind up on the run from a corrupt cop (Rosie Perez) and her fellow hitmen after, Rogen accidentally catches Franco’s boss murdering a competing drug boss.

Harold and Kumar – Honestly when is the only time you want White Castle? The first installment of the H&K franchise is a truly relatable classic for truly relating stoners. Get the giggles watching stoner friends embark on a quest to satisfy their craving for a Crave Case.

How High – Talk about HIGHer education. Redman and Method Man must’ve been extra blazed when they wrote a movie about how two stoners end up in the possession of some magical weed (all weed is magical but if this was a strain it would be called David Blaine) that enhances their intelligence so much they end up getting accepted into Harvard.

Kid Cannabis – This exciting dramedy is true-life Bud Biopic that is based on an Idahoan teen and high school dropout who builds a multimillion-dollar marijuana ring by trafficking drugs through the backwoods between the U.S. and Canada.

Culture High – Who doesn’t love a good documentary while high? The Grape Ape (it’s a marijuana strain) debate showcases a two-sided affair revealing the truth behind the arguments and motives governing both those who support and oppose the existing and upcoming weed laws.

Weeds – Not a movie but damn it’s good, plus Nancy Botwin was MILF of the year at least twice. Bong up to eight seasons showcasing the troubles and sexcapades of a widowed suburban mom who starts growing and selling marijuana to make enough money to support her family.

High Maintenance – Ok, another show, but this one is still on the air and is shot incredibly well as it diaries a nameless dealer in delivering to across New York City, all who have their own quirks. The show is shot in a way that showcases The Guy delivering to his customers and later on makes brief appearances in their lives, giving a glimpse into their daily routines.

Honorable Mentions: Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Super Troopers, Dazed and Confused, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Friday, and Grandma’s Boy. Now that your hazy and heavy red eyes have made it through this dope list, it’s high time you inhaled all this great cannabis cinema.
