Mayor Ed Lee Died Last Night at SF General Hospital
San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee was pronounced dead last night at 1:11 am at SF General Hospital, he was 65 years old. Former Mayor Willie Brown told CBS 5 that the cause of death was a heart attack and that Lee suffered the attack while he was grocery shopping in his neighborhood. Brown also had some words to say about Lee’s career and legacy:
Supervisor London Breed is now acting Mayor, and if 6 supervisors vote her in, she will become interim Mayor. San Francisco residents will not vote for a new Mayor until November of 2019. Before last night, former California State Senator Mark Leno was believed to be the front-runner in the next San Francisco Mayoral race.
Edwin Lee was a civil rights attorney and housing activist before serving in many different governmental posts under Mayor Willie Brown and Mayor Gavin Newsom. He became the city and county’s first Asian-American mayor in 2011. His Asian decent is very significant considering San Francisco is a county where more than 35% of residents are of Asian descent.
2015 SF Mayoral candidate, Broke-Ass Stuart, is currently writing a much more detailed piece about his former political opponent, and it should be ready later today.
