Bring Your Umbrella, SF! Wet Weather Is Here All Week Long

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Batten down the hatches, Bay Area! The sassy weather gods have decided it’s time for a watery encore, and it looks like we’re in for a week of soggy shenanigans. Forget about that umbrella you left at the office; you’re going to need a full-on ark.

The curtain opened on this liquid extravaganza last Sunday, with the first showers tap-dancing their way into the scene. But hold onto your waterproof boots, this ain’t your grandma’s rainstorm. According to the National Weather Service’s Brayden Murdock, this week’s precipitation party won’t be as well-organized as a middle school dance. Brace yourselves for an erratic rainfall rollercoaster, where the only guarantee is “off and on rain for a good portion of the day.” So, basically, Mother Nature is throwing a temper tantrum with intermittent bouts of tears.

And if you were hoping for a dramatic, atmospheric river-fueled downpour reminiscent of last winter’s spectacle, well, tough luck. Murdock’s here to crush those dreams like a meteorological Grinch. “It’s not going to be very well organized,” he says. Translation: Expect a lot of showery activity and enough gray skies to make Eeyore jealous.

But fear not, dear Bay Area residents, because this precipitation fiesta has a few more acts up its sleeve. Monday is set to be the headliner, with a cold front and a low-pressure system barging in, bringing moderate to heavy rain and messing up your already hectic rush-hour commute. By Tuesday, the rain will reluctantly pack its bags and move inland, leaving you with the delightful gift of showers to brighten your day. It’s like the weather’s way of saying, “You’re welcome.”

As the week unfolds, another low-pressure system will make its grand entrance, promising a new round of lighter showers. It’s like the weather can’t decide whether to go all-out or play it cool. So, expect some indecisive drizzle that’s about as committed as a millennial at a job fair.

But hold onto your waterproof hats – there’s hope on the horizon. By Thursday, the skies will clear, offering a brief respite from this liquid onslaught. However, before you start planning that outdoor holiday picnic, Murdock warns that there might be another round of rain just before Christmas. Classic weather move, keeping us on our toes and our umbrellas at the ready.

According to the weather service, most Bay Area cities will be gifted with 2 to 3 inches of rain this week. For context, that’s about as much as the number of times you’ve wondered why you moved to a place with such unpredictable weather.

And speaking of unpredictability, downtown San Francisco is experiencing its 26th driest year out of 173 years’ worth of daily measurements. Congratulations, San Francisco, you’re officially part of the precipitation underachievers club.

As for our friends in Lake Tahoe and the Sierra, Murdock dishes out some lukewarm news about snow. Sure, there’s moisture heading their way, but the cold front seems to be bringing warm air along for the ride. So, while snow is still a possibility, it’s not exactly a winter wonderland setup. Mother Nature is apparently feeling rebellious this year, giving us a waterlogged spectacle instead of the picturesque snowfall we secretly wanted.

And let’s not forget our maritime enthusiasts – a rare southerly swell and gale-force winds are threatening the waters, making it a perilous time for smaller craft and a concern for larger vessels. It’s like the Bay Area’s version of a nautical drama series – “Stormy Seas and Soggy Sails.”

So, buckle up, Bay Area. This week’s weather is serving up a mixed bag of precipitation, indecision, and a sprinkle of sassy meteorological vibes. Stay dry, stay sassy, and maybe invest in a better umbrella while you’re at it.

Author’s note: So, let me explain the use of the word “sassy” in this article. My friend wanted me to write a weather article and use the word sassy as much as possible without it being obvious.

I’m sorry.
