Did SFPD Mishandle The Death Of Jaxon Sales?
It’s no secret that San Francisco has long been a haven for the LGBT community, but despite this reputation, instances of abuse and harm in the community are underreported.
The relationship between law enforcement and the LGBT community has been strained since the founding of America when being gay was literally illegal. Distrust of police is as common in LGBT circles as it is in any other minority groups, which is why a proper investigation of the death of Jaxon Sales is so important. Not only for the family or the LGBT community, but anyone who values justice.
Jaxon Sales was a 20 year old who allegedly agreed to go on a blind date in a wealthy San Francisco enclave with a man he had never previously met.
Jaxon was found dead in the bed of a 41 year old stranger in a home where, according to the family, a similar drug overdose happened a week prior.
According to the Sales family, he told them that he would be returning home, but unfortunately that was the last time they would ever speak with their son. Jaxon was found dead in the bed of a 41 year old stranger in a home where a similar drug overdose happened a week prior.
Jaxon’s death was ruled an accidental drug overdose. The drug he overdosed on was GHB, commonly referred to as the ‘date-rape drug.’ According to the family, the San Francisco Medical Examiner’s dismissed the family’s suspicions of foul play as the SF OCME allegedly stated that “the gay community uses GHB.”
The Sales family alleges that their son’s death wasn’t thoroughly investigated because he was gay. SFPD wasn’t of much assistance according to the Sales family either.
Jaxon was allegedly taken to the apartment by an acquaintance who, according to the Sales family, wasn’t questioned by police. On top of that, the 41 year old man who was last with Jaxon before he died stated that when he woke up at 6;30 AM, Jaxon was snoring, but at 7:30 this man called the police to report Jaxon’s overdose, leading the family of believe there are inconsistencies in the story that the police department accepted at face value.
As stated earlier, this apparently is the second time a GHB related overdose had occurred. And the family wants answers about why the person in the first incident wasn’t questioned for information that may help them better understand what happened to their son.
The family has opened up a petition on Change.org that asks the San Francisco Police Department and the San Francisco Office of Medical Examiner to reopen the case and thoroughly investigate the cause of death.
As of this article, the petition is at 32,000 of the 35,000 it’s requesting.
