BAS Pride 2013: Pink Saturday on Twin Peaks; Dyke March; 1/2 Price at Indie Cent; FREE Entrance to Swag
Look at that world through rose-coloured glasses! It’s Pink Saturday queer folk, and the hits just keep on coming. As of yesterday afternoon, the wedding bells started clanging again and hordes of lovebirds are promenading down those steps downtown like so many Marilyns and Joes.
So whether you’re kick starting that honeymoon or confirmed in your bachelorhood, there be plenty to do in the city today.
If you’re an early riser and feel like going for a bit of a hike, then mosey on up to Twin Peaks and help stake down the Pink Triangle that has been appearing every Saturday before Pride since 1995. It’s all volunteer-based and they need just as many helping hands taking it down at the end of the weekend. Free coffee and doughnuts for your labour.
If you need a drink after all that climbing or you are just a late riser, local clotheshorses, Sui Generis are hosting their annual Pride In Style Party. Mingle amongst the hip and sartorial as you sip on delicate effervescence gratis. Your mellow Saturday morning buzz will be tickled and massaged by the audio selections of Honey Soundsystem’s Jason Kendig.
Activism returns today in the form of the 21st Annual SF Dyke March. The great gathering happens at noon in Dolores, with the march commencing at 6 p.m. Make sure to stop by BAS favourite watering hole, The Lexington Club before or after for a margarita that will lie you flat on your back….perhaps while reading an old issue of On Our Backs.
When it comes to closing out the day and segueing into that long fuchsia night, the obvious destination is, of course, the rollicking block party that Castro Street becomes every year, and really, you should at least go for one drink…EARLY. Otherwise, plan on packing your own refrshment.
Once you start feeling a little crowd anxiety, two parties have exclusively offered BAS readers some entrance deals if you feel like being indoors and up close and personal.
At barely a year old, Club OMG! has quick made a solid rep on 6th Street with a steady roster of drag shows, comedy and social activism. Like some rainbow-lit cavern, their lighting pairs well with their South Asian tipples and fluid deejays. This Saturday, they will be hosting Angelenos Michael Carrera and Ryan Jones for the Meat Street Tea Dance during the day, at which yours truly will be pouring hooch.
Right after djs Go and Kid Sysko take over the decks for Swag, which goes from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. if you literally just can’t stop the music. Like most parties tonight, covers aren’t cheap, but OMG! has graciously given us four passes to give away for the nighttime fete. Hit us up so we can get you on the list.
Across town, in the Lower Haight, crowd darling Indie Cent returns to the red-lit dance floor at Underground SF. The line-up for this outing is led by glamazon and RuPaul Drag Race alumnus Honey Mahogany, peaches and cream princess Lindsay Slowhands, be-glittered doyennes, Trangela Lansbury and Mx Mannequin, as well as djs Josh Peace (Mustache Mondays) and resident Haute Toddy.
There will be free t-shirts, more cheap Fernet than in all of Buenos Aires, and for you lucky, lucky devils, half-price entrance. If you are reading this, and you get thee to the Underground between 9:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., simply say the code words “pink hanky” and you’ll get in for $5. Aren’t they lovely guys?
