Not everybody does “costumes.” They smack of  frat parties and drama kids that never grow up. Plus you run the risk of looking like an ass if you go anywhere after the party.  But add to the mix fancy french cocktails, free food and a gramophone and you got yourself a goddamn PARTY! If you missed the boat (sorry bad pun) on the throwdown’s at Governor’s Island this summer now is your chance to make-up for it at the Jazz Age Lawn Party.

Bring your best Charleston moves and join Michael Arenella & His Dreamland Orchestra for some not so dirty dancing. Other entertainment includes old ’78 records on an old gramophone, swing dancers, an antique car show, and classic games like tug’o war. While you’re milling about the island, sip on cocktails by St.Germaine and feast on delicacies by Cercle Rouge . For ladies, there will be a slew of vintage clothing dealers and specialty milliners (hat makers) and even a pie bake-off. Be sure to dress up in your best duds, so you can get a professional vintage portrait done to finally replace that one from the Jersey shore circa 1990-something.

Of course I’ll be missing it AGAIN this year, since the powers that be have forced me out of town, Ugh family. But be sure to hike up those stockings and hitch a ride on the ferry because this jazz-fest won’t be back til spring. Check out the full list of events here.

Laura S - Spendthrift Scribe

Laura S, left the "sixth borough" three years ago to settle in Brooklyn. After working at some daily rags, she now does writing on the side but still eats more Ramen then necessary. When she's not moving residences every 6 months, eating her way through every neighborhood, and trying every microbrew known to man, she is unsuccessfully rediscovering home economics. With her binging days behind her, she's now exploring new projects and rediscovering the city that she loves (although is still prone to sliding on her knees during a Prince karaoke set).
