DIY Porn: Instructables

You'll never be bored again.

Is this hand made of wood or did somebody dose my eggs this morning?

Dear Instrucables,
How I do so love you…. From your LED Bike Wheel Images to your Star Trek Funerals, your PMA about DIY truly rocks my socks! Many an hour have I spent lustily pursuing your pages, learning the Sidewider, planning to exercise, performing gummy bear surgery…Remember the time we Successfully Procrastinated and Accomplished Nothing? Ah, it was more priceless than a thousand roses….

Gummy Tri-bear-atops hunts for prey.

Gummy bear surgery takes a steady hand and an aversion to eating your patients.

Seriously though? Instructables? It’s rad. Just watching the banner display change across the home page is entertaining. It’s all the best parts of wicked smart tech geekerie blended with accessible punk DIY ethos. Instructables is the child of Squid Labs and the MIT Media Lab, which means it was created by people who have degrees in mechanical engineering and throw around words like “micro-electromechanical” (it also means that I didn’t read the 10 page diatribe about how the site was created).

Surburban Survival Kit

So that's where I should keep me mini tabasco bottle!

Basically it sprung fully formed from the head of Zeus and now there is an awesome community built around the sharing of various how-to projects and problem-solving forums. Which is super helpful if you need to say… learn how to kill ants, or sew a removable winter liner into your coat, orbreed rocks, or keep your bike seat from getting stolen. Wanna use that Altoids tin for something other than your stash? Got ya covered. Handbag made from duct tape?Natch. Now, go make your mom something for Mothers Day. I’m gonna be out in front of my house practicing my CandyShop.

I second the notion that Instructables is the greatest ever. People don’t spend enough time crafting multi-headed gummy bears these days.

  2. Seems like I need to check it out.
