MICHAEL JACKSON DAY

Well the coroner’s report is out, words like 'œhomicide' and “acute benzodiazepine effect' have been thrown around on TMZ and Extra, and the family is looking for justice.  But for one day '“ today '“ Brooklyn has decided to forget all the media frenzy and tabloid stories and just celebrate what would have been the 51st Birthday of one of the greatest performers in our time.  Today is Michael Jackson Day (in Brooklyn)!  So you’d better be heading to Prospect Park’s Nethermead Meadows (does anyone else think it fitting that it sounds so similar to Netherland?) to join with 10,000 other fans, including Rev. Al Sharpton, Spike Lee, and DJ Spinna.  Dance and sing, rain-or-shine for FREE from noon '“ 5pm.

THE REALLY REALLY FREE MARKET

Now, we all know that this recession surprised you just as much as the rain for the entire month of June did, but here’s an opportunity to get creative about it.  This Sunday, Aug. 30th, check out The Really Really FREE Market, a bazaar and celebration focused on discarding capitalist notions of interaction and having fun discovering new models of exchange.  So bring your food, clothes, skills, music, and things to SHARE with everyone else who is bringing their stuff!  Musicians, massage therapists, acupuncturists, dental consultants, huggers, face-painters, silk screeners, tarot card readers, and chefs, this is a venue for you to get your skill out there for people who want to appreciate it!!  And if you are going, bring some of your crazy ass friends who have those underutilized skills along with you.  I love this concept just about as much as I love the prospect of fall being upon us.

The Really Really FREE Market
Sunday Aug. 30th
Judson Memorial Church
55 Washington Square South [Manhattan]
3-7pm; $FREE

Danielle Levanas - Bargain Soul Huntress

Danielle Levanas - Bargain Soul Huntress

Danielle was raised by a pack of coyotes in the Los Angeles hills. Since arriving in NY in 2001, she has had any number of strange jobs, including back-up singing for JELVIS (the Jewish Elvis), starting the non-profit LYDIA, and writing political cabarets. A huge advocate for travel as a way of life, you can find her at the Brooklyn Public Library when her bank account is empty, fantasizing about where to head off to next.
