Blue Collar Chit Chat and Chickies – Dining on a Dime at the Chicken-N-Coop

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news
Early bird gets the worm.

Early bird gets the worm.

When it comes to cheap grub, nothing beats the San Francisco tradition of the hofbrau.  Whether the food is palatable or not is debatable.

When it comes to the most famous Tommy’s and Lefty O’Doul’s are the crown regents of course.

However they can be insanely crowded and a little red-eyed and sloppy.

A wholesome, friendly alternative is the Chick-N-Coop.  There are actually two of them, but the one in the Excelsior is definitely the best.  Owned by a Greek family who likes to banter with customers, you can’t get more of an old school neighbourhood vibe than lunchtime in one of its olive leather booths.  And true to its name, the chicken is a pretty tasty bird.

Stephen's early years were spent in a boxcar overlooking downtown Los Angeles. From there he moved around the state with his family before settling under the warm blanket of smog that covers suburban Southern California. Moving around led to his inability to stay in one place for very long, but San Francisco has been reeling him back in with its siren song since 1999.
By trade he pours booze, but likes to think he can write and does so occasionally for the SF Bay Guardian, Bold Italic and 7x7. He also likes to enjoy time spent in old eateries, bars and businesses that, by most standards, would have been condemned a long time ago.
