Young Farmers Mixer and Photo Exhibition @ 18 Reasons
My house during Harricane Iniki. No joke.
Who doesn’t love farmers? I’d like to be one some day. I grew up on a Macadamia nut farm on Kauai. Or what was supposed to be a Macadamia nut farm. You see, Mac nuts trees take seven years to mature. But on year eight was hurricane Iniki, which wiped out 350 trees, and the dream with it. Sad story. I’m sorry for the tangent. I’m supposed to be making you laugh. Well, jump to now, when I ask my folks if I can go live in our house on the farm with my friends. A big resounding “Hell no! You don’t know how to take care of the land.” To which I replied, “Yeah, but I have hellof attractive bearded friends who do!” This Saturday, a bunch of those attractive bearded friends, and probably some attractive bearded strangers, will be at a Young Farmers Mixer slash exhibition opening at 18 Reasons (Bi-Rite’s sister space across the street). Not to mention the lady farmers I know will be there. Talk about the whole package! Ok, this is not a dating post. Sorry again for the tangent. The point is, these events are usually SUPER fun and super FREE, so you should go. Oh and Davyd Nereo and Winnie Byrd will be playing tunes and they are rad. Plus locally-grown treats and a cash bar. Do it.
The exhibition: “A SENSE OF PLACE: Contemporary Agrarian Photography featuring new works by small farmers from across the nation. Many of the images of farms that we, as consumers of media, are exposed to are often taken by outsiders with no anchors in the land they photograph. In selecting works created by new agrarians who are emotionally rooted in their environment we seek to unearth a deeper layer of the changing landscape of agriculture.” Exhibition Dates: February 3–March 31st, 2011. Opening party: Saturday, February 5th, 5-7pm.
The venue: “18 Reasons brings people together to deepen our relationship to food and each other. Through an innovative community center and thought-provoking, fun programming, we inspire action and foster collaboration toward creating a just and sustainable food system.”
