Do it in the Dark – Earth Hour 2011

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

I like Earth. It’s a pretty neat planet in my opinion. Not as rad as Saturn, or as controversial as Pluto (STILL A PLANET IN MY HEART), but overall Earth is pretty cool. Unfortunately, we humans have royally fucked ourselves into a corner, environmentally speaking. We’re on an express train to some post-apocalyptic Waterworld shit if we don’t start seriously changing our habits and addressing global issues of energy, resources and consumption. The only positive thing about global warming is that we might finally rid ourselves of the goddamn polar bears (RIP Knut).

Tonight is your opportunity to start Earth Month (aka “April”) off on the right foot with the fifth annual Earth Hour. From 8:30 to 9:30 PM local time, citizens of the world will address their concern for climate change by turning off their lights for one hour. It’s a way to show solidarity with the global community, and is also an excuse to do some wacky things in the dark. Like I said, this is a GLOBAL event, but I live in San Francisco and am a selfish jerk, so I have brainstormed a few cheap ways to enhance your Earth Hour in the City By the Bay. On second thought, I guess most of these could be done anywhere…meh.

1. Play a board game by flashlight. It is easier to cheat that way.
2. Hide-and-go-seek in the dark. Or sardines. Drunk.
3. Take a walk and judge everyone who still has their lights on, occasionally yelling “WHY DO YOU HATE EARTH!?!” in their general direction.
4. Go to Crissy Field and watch the GGB go dark. That will be cool. Cool, then cold, then boring. If you’re hardcore you could even wait around and watch them turn the lights back on. Oooooh. Aaaaaah.

You could also just be a dick and turn on every light in your house and do the “suck it” gesture out your window to all those fools sitting in the dark. The choice is yours.

Ali was born and raised in the Wholesome/Creepy capital of the world, Salt Lake City, UT. Once she was old enough to blow that pop stand she escaped to the place that was the anti-SLC: The Peoples Gay-public of Drugifornia aka San Francisco (holla 30 Rock!). You can now find her throughout this glorious city slurping Pho and scheming with her best friend Pinky doing what they do every night; try and take over the world.
