Hypothesis: An Art/Science Fair
Science fairs used to be the shit, or at least a pretty momentous occasion in our pre-alcohol, pre-groping, pre-Ke$ha worlds. Remember? There’d always be the kid with the volcano, always. There’d be some future neuroscientist doing crazy shit on her actual pet. And then there were the rest of us, hanging out in the middle with lame projects that nonetheless were kinda thrilling at the time. I think I collected dew on saran wrap in my backyard to measure precipitation.
The best part, though, was probably getting one of those segmented boards at Rite-Aid and decking it out with all sorts of swag. That was the real test, the real display of something even more important than science: popularity. Lisa Frank, glitter, and feathers – that’s all you needed to know. Maybe the magenta zebra wasn’t scientifically accurate, but damn, it was hot.
The LAB hosts an even better science fair this weekend, because not only is the contest likely free of 8 year-olds, it’s full of actual artists. Hypothesis: An Art/Science Fair is restricted to entries on those classic segmented foam boards, and as with any real science fair, there’s a lot at stake: ribbons. Cookies and punch are also free to the casual wanderer.
