See Art Collective “My Barbarian,” FREE at NYU This Thursday

I don’t know about you, but I like my social and political commentary with some rhinestones and jazz hands.  For this reason, Los Angeles-based collective My Barbarian is totally awesome.  Using theatrical performance and video installations to comment on historical dilemmas and current political crises, the trio– Malik Gaines, Jade Gordon, and Alexandro Segade– take critical issues and turn them into some serious spectacle.  Lucky for you, My Barbarian will also be hosting a lecture at NYU’s Einstein Auditorium this Thursday, December 15th.

Often using singing and music to explore subjects such as Morgan Le Fay and human sacrifice, My Barbarian manages to take some pretty serious shit and transform it into playful, weird-but-cute performances.  If you haven’t seen their work, I highly recommend that you check it out on YouTube.  It’s performance art, but without any of the freaky, “I’m gonna have someone shoot me in a gallery!” or “Let’s make everyone rub up against our naked bodies!” kind of stuff.  It’s performance art for people who don’t think that they like performance art.

So get to know the group online, then get to know them better at NYU this Thursday.  Hopefully there will be lots of rhinestones and jazz hands!
