The words “Chickens in Bed-Stuy” may conjure up images of an awesome muppet remake of a Spike Lee joint, but don’t get too excited just yet– when we talk about hens in Central Brooklyn on this website, we’re talking about urban chicken keeping. Intrigued? Then attend a FREE workshop on the subject at Schenectady Avenue Community Garden this Thursday!
Chickens are kind of cute and kind of scary at the same time, but keeping them on your rooftop can provide you with FREE, fresh eggs, and a cool new hobby. True, urban rooftop farming and staying local are all the rage right now, but you don’t care about that– chicken keeping could potentially be a money-saver and/or new business for your broke ass! Thankfully, Bee Ayers of BK Farmyards will be hosting the workshop at Schenectady Community Garden, and will tell you all that you need to know to get your own urban farm up and running!
One question, though– do New York City Chickens take on New Yorker characteristics? Do they have Brooklyn accents or peck away at Everything bagels or name-drop all of the time or have no hobbies besides working and boozing? Guess I’ll have to wait til Thursday and ask ol’ Bee Ayers about these mind-benders.
