The weekend San Francisco exploded will be coming to its sun-kissed crescendo Sunday. Every year the first weekend in October is nuts, but this year has been particularly insane with the addition of America’s Cup, ball games, etc. If you feel the need to take a breather from the fever pitch, you can seek sanctuary in some of the city’s pantheons for free.
For Hardly, Strictly revelers, you just need to toddle over to the California Academy of Sciences, although the caveat with this one is that you actually have to reside in the Sunset or Parkside, which is probably someone’s way of making up to those neighbourhoods for the fact that they will not be able to take any form of Muni ‘til Tuesday morning.
For those escaping North Beach and the Embarcadero, your closest quiet island will probably be the Asian Art Museum, where, courtesy of Target, you can commune with Hindu stone deities and regain the hearing you lost to the Blue Angels and screaming kiddies.
If, however, you are beginning to tire of trying to shoehorn yourself into one of Castro Street’s gravy boats while taking in its eponymous street fair, just slide on over to 18th Street where yours truly and my fellow volunteers will be watching over the queer stuff at the GLBT History Museum. Peruse the matchbook and video displays, ponder the formidable dildo collection, or just zone out for a sec before you take a deep inhale and jump back into the dance-a-thon outside.
