All-Day Mexican Breakfast: Red Cafe in The Mission
The Mission’s Red Cafe
I few months ago, I “discovered” and subsequently wrote about San Jalisco in The Mission, a great spot serving fabulous and appropriately greasy Mexican-style breakfast all day. Here’s another gem fashioned along similar lines: Red Cafe, situated in the same neighborhood a few blocks away on the corner of 25th and Mission. If your lifestyle and/or work schedule tends to push your rising time to between the hours of ten am and one pm, places like this are a godsend; by the time you’ve unwrapped the bandages from your face and body and chewed your way out of your subterranean coffin, it might be as late as three pm before you’ve managed to walk through the door and choose a table or a spot at the long, beat-up counter.
Looking as you might for the tried-and-true favorites of pre-lunch mexican cuisine, you won’t be disappointed by the familiar presence of Huevos Rancheros, Chilaquiles and Huevos a la Mexicana. Less familiar to the un-initiated might be things like fried cheese and plantains, which suggest the influence of food usually associated with Central American countries. In any case, these repasts may be had at very reasonable prices any time from seven am to nine pm Monday through Saturday, and from eight am to nine pm Sundays. Come and get it.
