Wendell Pierce From Treme & The Wire
Reviving New Orleans
Tony Award-winning actor and producer Wendell Pierce had leading roles in the HBO series The Wire and Treme and has appeared in feature films including Selma, Ray and Waiting to Exhale. He will star as Clarence Thomas in HBO’s upcoming series Confirmation opposite Kerry Washington, who will portray Anita Hill. Since Hurricane Katrina, Pierce has been helping to rebuild the flood-ravaged Pontchartrain Park neighborhood in his native New Orleans. His new memoir The Wind in the Reeds: A Storm, A Play, and the City That Would Not Be Broken, reminds us of the collaborative potential art has to help heal ourselves, our families and our communities. THE ESSENTIAL TALK-AND-TASTING GUIDE TO BECOMING A WHISKEY KNOW-IT-ALL
What’s the difference between Scotch and Rye? What exactly is Canadian whisky? Does the introduction of a simple “e” – going from whisky to whiskey – mean anything? Whiskey fever is sweeping the nation, with craft distilleries popping up in cities and remote counties alike. But the wealth of choices brings just as many puzzlements. Happily, Master Sommelier Richard Betts and local illustrator extraordinaire Wendy MacNaughton have teamed up to create a clever distillation of America’s favorite libation, The Essential Scratch-and-Sniff Guide to Becoming a Whiskey Know-It-All. They divide whiskey into three simple categories – grain, wood and place – as a jumping-off point to navigate the details of this exalted spirit. Join them for a talk and tasting with live on-stage illustrations! Know your booze before you choose! The bookseller for this event is Omnivore Books.
