Gary Shandling Films ‘It’s Great That Gary Shandling is Still Alive’, & then Dies of Heart Attack

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Gary Shandling was what they call ‘an envelope pushing’ comedian.  He contributed a lot to the development of American comedy on television.  He was best known for his HBO series ‘The Larry Sander’s Show“, a show unlike anything before it.  A show about making a show, it really laid the foundation for so much of the ‘reality’ based comedy shows of today, and it lampooned Hollywood in the process.  It was a show where A-List celebrities could come on, make fun of themselves, and feel perfectly comfortable doing it.

Gary’s good friend and peer Jerry Seinfeld just had him on an episode of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.  The episode is ironically titled, ‘It’s Great That Garry Shandling is Still Alive‘,  it’s ironic of course, because the comedian dropped dead soon after filming it.  A dark joke perhaps the comedian would have enjoyed.  In the episode the two eerily talk about death and mortality quite a bit…while of course making us laugh all the while.
