Why Is Frank Somerville Going To Jail For 30 Days?

If you’re from the Bay Area and have spent any amount of time watching the news in the last decade, chances are you know who Frank Somerville is. He’s an East Bay native, who, despite his well-meaning nature, can be a little cringe, which is fine, we’re all a little cringe. But cringey-ness is the least of Mr. Somerville’s issues – he’s also got a major alcohol problem.

The former KTVU anchor had all charges dismissed related to an alleged altercation with family members, but he faces a 30-day jail sentence for other violations. Somerville pleaded no contest to reckless driving under the influence and admitted to a probation violation. His attorney, Shannan Dugan, mentioned that they are seeking an alternative to jail, such as community service through the Alameda County Sheriff’s Work Alternative Program. A decision on this application is expected within 30 days.

The most recent incident stems from Somerville’s arrest in June 2023, following an altercation with his family in Berkeley and subsequent DUI arrest. Initially charged with multiple misdemeanors, including assault and public intoxication, these charges were dismissed due to insufficient evidence. However, Somerville admitted to violating his probation and faces a reduced “wet-reckless” charge. Additional penalties include $830 in fines, a nine-month DUI program, one year of court probation, and a no-contact order with his brother for a year.

Somerville’s troubles began in 2021 with a previous DUI arrest and his departure from KTVU after an on-air incident.

The thing is, I don’t think jail is going to help Frank. I think Frank needs real help. The man is 66 years old and, if you watch his Youtube videos, you know he’s somewhat harmless. He’s a well-meaning Berkeley dad with a substance problem. He’s not some mad man, he’s just a guy who’s been dumb while drunk, which, at some point in our lives, is something we’ve all been guilty of at least once.

I would honestly love to see Frank back on the news because who doesn’t love a good redemption arc?
