Wow! Broke-Ass Stuart is Now 20 Years Old!

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

This photo by Victoria Smith was taken for my 2007 book. You might recognize it as the header for this website!

In the summer of 2004 I put out a little 33 page zine called Broke-Ass Stuart’s Guide to Living Cheaply in San Francisco. It consisted of cheap places to eat and drink, and cheap things to see and do. I used my backpack and my bus pass to distribute it to shops all over town. I had no idea at the time how radically that little zine would change my life. It ultimately gave me direction, a career, and the opportunity to build community in ways I never imagined.

What started off as a zine turned into so much more. I got to travel the world and write about it for Lonely Planet, have a series of Broke-Ass Stuart guidebooks, and even create and host my own travel TV show on IFC called Young, Broke, and Beautiful. And of course, create the award winning website BrokeAssStuart.com.

The original 2004 zine is on the left. Volume 2, which came out in 2005 is on the right

Through all of this, Broke-Ass Stuart (me and the brand) have been here to help you navigate this insane world with a bit of charm, a lot of humor, and fuckload of dirty words.

You come to BAS to find out about what is really happening in the Bay Area, on the street level. You come to learn about the best in underground arts and to get hip to what events are happening. You come to soak up how small local businesses are creating meaningful culture. And most importantly, you come to BAS to drink in the San Francisco that is disappearing.

But to keep BAS from disappearing too, we need your help.

It costs over $10,000 to run BrokeAssStuart.com every month, and it’s constantly getting more expensive. By joining the Broke-Ass Stuart Patreon you can help make sure we’ll be here for you for another 20 years.

P.S. If you’re confused why I had a 20th anniversary party a couple years ago, it’s because that was the 20th anniversary of me moving to SF. And damn that was one hell of a party!
