Tattoo Boogaloo Giving Tattoos for the ACLU!

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

That’s right, nasty women, bad hombres, and all around broke-ass freedom fighters! The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) fundraiser, thrown by our friends at Tattoo Boogaloo (shenanigans, team, and artistic prowess described in detail here) is set up and planned for Saturday, January 21st, from 1pm until “late.” The event will help raise money for the ACLU, Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), and Planned Parenthood. Tattoo Boogaloo is located at 528 Green St, San Francisco, in North Beach. You can find the Facebook event page here. And as an additionally awesome incentive – there will be snacks!

As you can read above (but this is important, so I will repeat it), Tattoo Boogaloo will be doing flash tattoos for the suggested donation of 50$. All of the proceeds will go directly to the ACLU, and here are some of the tattoos you can get as a result of your awesome solidarity and help:

ALSO, the Worthington Law Centre, a criminal defense firm in the Bay Area, is going to offer partial matching donations for however much they make!!! (Math and budget details above for those of you who are good at $$$ stuff). The end result is half of those proceeds will go to the SPCL, and the other half to Planned Parenthood.

For those not in the know, here is a breakdown of the organizations that will be receiving the proceeds. The ACLU has, “For almost 100 years […] worked to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitution and laws of the United States.” Some of the fights it has fought, more in detail, have been (according to its webpage), “[…] achieving full equality for LGBT people, establishing new privacy protections for our digital age of widespread government surveillance, ending mass incarceration, or preserving the right to vote or the right to have an abortion […].”

The SPCL describes itself as “dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of our society. Using litigation, education, and other forms of advocacy, the SPLC works toward the day when the ideals of equal justice and equal opportunity will be a reality.” According to their webpage, they fight hate, teach tolerance, and seek justice.

Planned Parenthood, perhaps with the most visibility of the three, has been particularly vulnerable, as of late. Over 100 years old, Planned Parenthood is a bastion of affordable and accessible healthcare, fighting for women’s rights, equality, and, well, all that is good and nice and provides life and freedom to everyone, basically (my words, not theirs. Thanks PP <3). Their motivation is that “women should have the information and care they need to live strong, healthy lives and fulfill their dreams,” they describe themselves as “a trusted health care provider, an informed educator, a passionate advocate, and a global partner helping similar organizations around the world” and they provide “vital reproductive health care, sex education, and information to millions of women, men, and young people worldwide.”

Rae Bathgate - Down and Out and Overseas

Rae, known also (depending on the country) as Rachelle/Raquel/ Rachele (and often sadly mistaken as Richard, because biblical names are hard you guys) is an aspiring writer and now sort of a dick for having actually defined herself as such. She was born and lived over the first half of her life in Italy; she then moved to the States and lived a good ten years there (including in SF). Currently back in Europe, she is neither a hapless American tourist nor a snobby European jerkyjerk; luckily for you, she is some weird ungodly combination of both. Also, she’s broke and is probably stealing bread crumbs from pigeons.
