200+ Employees at Golden Gate Fields Test Positive for COVID

On Friday Berkeleyside reported that Golden Gate Fields, home of the legendary Dollar Day, has had a serious COVID-19 outbreak.
Despite being closed to the public due to the pandemic, races are still happening onsite and the staff of roughly 500 people is still working. Of those people around 200 live on in dorm-style housing attached to Golden Gate Field’s barns. According to Berkeleyside, “These grooms, riders, hot walkers (who cool down the horses) and other staff — who live and work in very close quarters — are employed by the 60 or so trainers at the race track.”
In a statement on Friday by the City of Berkeley and 1/ST Racing, the company that runs Golden Gate Fields, officials said that “more than 200 people living or working on-site at the racetrack have tested positive for COVID-19, “and that they are now is following all of the City’s recommendations for testing, quarantine and isolation.”
This sizable outbreak has lead Berkeley’s biggest spike in COVID cases since the pandemic began.
