Cabaret Cinema, Fridays at the Rubin Museum of Art

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

New York City is full of big name art institutions – the Met, MoMA, the Guggenheim – but, it pays (or saves) to check out smaller gems like the Rubin Museum. Dedicated to historical and contemporary Himalayan and Buddhist art, the Rubin is a nice little retreat from the fast pace of NYC, and with FREE admission on Fridays from 6PM -10PM, it takes a little stress off of your pockets as well. In addition to the aforementioned, there’s another unique draw to the Rubin, and that’s their Cabaret Cinema series on Friday nights.

Cabaret Cinema gives you a chance to watch an international roster of classic films – usually accompanied by introductions from big names such as Uma Thurman, Brian Cox or Alan Cumming – that highlight themes of concurrent exhibitions. The current series, India on the Verge, complements the Modernist Art From India: Bodies Unbound exhibition, and shows its last film, “Sixth Happiness,” this Friday. But, no worries, the next series, Silver Screen Shangri-La, begins after the holidays on January 6th. The lineup includes screenings of the 1937 and 1973 “Lost Horizon” films and ” The Abominable Snowman (of the Himalayas), which was, according to the site, “the least abominable of the 1950’s abominable snowman films.” Check here for the full listings with dates, and get ready for an unconventional night of art and classic cinema. Plus, Cabaret Cinema is FREE with a $7 drink purchase, a price tag cheaper than the usual NYC movie ticket or cocktail.

Tiara Francis - NY Know-it-all

Tiara was born in NYC, raised in NJ, and after studying Comp Lit at Columbia, vowed to never go back to the suburbs. While she has expensive taste, she also has shallow pockets and is always looking for a budget way to be a weekend warrior. Her hobbies include laughing way too loudly, putting hot sauce on/in everything - including margaritas - speaking French at inappropriate moments, and dancing like there’s no one else in da club.
