Approx. 2,080 San Francisco and San Mateo hotel workers went on strike and demonstrated over Labor Day weekend for better wages and workloads.
1,500 Hotel Workers & Janitors March Through Downtown San Francisco
Over 1,500 janitors and hotel workers marched through downtown San Francisco on May Day in a protest for higher wages, affordable health care, and better workloads. Union contracts covering 5,000 janitors and 10,000 Bay Area hotel workers are set to expire this summer, and workers say the march was intended to show their employers that they are ready for possible labor disputes.

A protestor in a giant turd costume joined the picketing workers at the BEI Hotel on the fourth day of their Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) strike. The union says that at least four workers have suffered diarrhea, stomach pain, or other symptoms of food poisoning since the hotel unilaterally laid off its cooks and outsourced cafeteria meals.
