A Brilliant Way to Fight The White Nationalist Rallies in Berkeley & SF

Activist and thought leader Elizabeth McLaughlin made an excellent suggestion on facebook addressing how to peacefully combat racist rallies like the one in #charlottesville.   Specifically, there are white supremacist rally planned for Crissy Field in San Francisco on August 26th and in Downtown Berkely on August 27th.  McLaughlin referenced a great, non-violent tactic to combat these hateful gatherings tried by anti-racist organizations in Germany.  When counter marches were failing to stop Neo Nazis from gathering there, counter protesters tried a different approach, they decided to hit the Nazi’s with their wallets:

VIA – Elizabeth Cronise McLaughlin Facebook post:

“Assuming the (SF & Berkeley) rally goes forward, I will personally commit to donating $1 to the Southern Poverty Law Center for every single neo-nazi motherfucker in attendance to further racial justice in this nation (and I may even do it in the name of Richard Spencer just for the sake of doing the most damage).

If I had done this earlier, Friday night would have garnered a $700 donation of support for SPLC from me alone. JUST IMAGINE the difference we could make collectively through this effort, even if we committed to donating a penny per neo-nazi!

Who’s with me?

Imagine how awesome would it be to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for SPLC every single time white nationalists marched in this nation. Imagine the difference we could make.

HOW AWESOME would that be?!”

“The Southern Poverty Law Center is dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of our society. Using litigation, education, and other forms of advocacy, the SPLC works toward the day when the ideals of equal justice and equal opportunity will be a reality.”

Yeah, fight nazism and fascism by giving money to nonprofits because nonprofit corporations have such a good track record at contesting the right wing.

I think it’s high time for a Trump piñata party. A dollar a swing. Seven swings for five bucks. Fifteen swings for ten bucks. Money goes to an anti-Nazi party, or educational group of your choice.

I have a big stick, and am only too happy to invest in a piñata or two. Also, I really want to take a big swing at something, and I’d like for it to be for something positive.

Why not just put on benefit performances of “The Producers” and leave it at that?

While respecting everyone’s right to protest as they feel moved to, personally I favor this approach. Out smart, out class, out shine. Here’s an article that provides more detail: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/nov/18/neo-nazis-tricked-into-raising-10000-for-charity

The SPLC doesn’t need your money, and you shouldn’t be promoting others sending them money. They already have millions, and the main thing they do is publish a list of so-called “hate groups”, while lining their own pockets. If you want to actually make a difference with your money, find local groups to support, where they do local good, and don’t have directors who get paid hundreds of thousands every year.

You should donate the money to AntiFa, who does more to track Nazis and Fascists than SPLC.
80%+ of AntiFa is surveillance and intelligence gathering.
SPLC does not do any tracking online of these groups even.

  • rch427

Oh, absolutely. Give money to a group that has no known organizational structure, no oversight or accountability, and that seeks out violent confrontations with rightwing asshats. Great idea! (/sarcasm)

Here’s a gofundme doing just this! Every $ raised going to the southern poverty law center:

I”ve added to this idea… Imagine an app built for this and every time a word is spoken, $1 gets added to the pot. When it reaches $10 the cash sound chimes over everyone’s little bluetooth speaker. Hundreds of them. When it hits $100 Trumpets go off (pun intended) and loud cheering sounds go off for every $100. Imagine them all in their formations, giving speeches or whatever they do, listening to the cash sounds going off and the Trumpets and cheers knowing that what they are doing is funding the law suits and policies that will change things for the better. While sitting across the street in our lawn chairs like we’re watching the parade.

If your aren’t satisfied, join them or start your own to become more effective. I’m so tired of lazy naysayers.

The last time that fascist skinheads came to SF, they tried to celebrate “white workers day” at union square. Hundreds of us showed up with D cell batteries in our pockets and the moment they began to call for genocide, we launched them as missiles. The fascists slunk away bloodied and we did not see hide nor hair of them until Trump was elected.

You are suggesting that we “do something, anything, but do it now.” That is bogus. Nonprofits suck down activist energy and neutralize. Their dominance of what was SF’s progressive electoral coalition is what has led to serial losses and a rampaging corporate/developer axis that is reaming our neighborhoods.

Throwing money at nonprofits is a waste of money. Even the SPLC that does good work, as they already have a nine figure endowment, plenty of money to invest to fund lawsuits today and forever.
