The Snack Depot: SOMA’s Best Kept Secret
I’m really big on deluding myself into thinking that I don’t need to turn to 7X7-esque resources to find the best stuff to eat in my neighborhood. I think I can sniff out what’s tasty on my own, like a bloodhound or a bulimic. I just use sites like 7X7, Broke-Ass Stuart (hey girl hey), and the Michael Bauer’s Chronicle food blog because it’s easy and I’m lazy '“ but if I wanted to put forth the effort, I could totally find all this stuff on my own.
But I gotta hand it to Yelp this week, guys. Without its patient guidance, I never would have found The Snack Depot… literally. This place is hidden inside of a SOMA real estate office building that’s attached to a gym and a Quizno’s. Even with the address and a semi-good idea of where this place was located, I had to have a building security guard shout directions at me from his post while I made wrong turns down a hallway. It reminded me of the last round in Legends of the Hidden Temple where you’re scrambling to assemble that silver monkey head and your partner at the bottom can’t believe how stupid you are for not being able to figure it out.
By the time I found the shop, they had stopped making their famed sandwiches. But as I turned to go, utterly defeated, the woman behind the counter offered me the last of their lentil salad. And let me tell you, it was phenom. I usually hate lentil salad, too.
