Old-Timey Lunch and Cheapie Treats at the Miyako Ice Cream Parlour
Fillmore Street can be a pretty damn depressing stretch to walk through at times. If you look down at the paving stones, you see the names of cool places that used to be there and when you look up and around you see concrete monoliths and lots of asphalt.
The Safeway complex is a pretty good example of this, but every once in a while the strip mall can harbor something treasured, like say, the Miyako Ice Cream parlour.
Nestled in it pre-fab environs for decades now, the Miyako somehow managed to stick around the neighbourhood even as the Victorians came crashing down and folks moved away like a cute old man that won’t budge and has a fondness for giving out treats.
A cozy one-stop shop, you can pretty much walk out the door with a sandwich, an ice cream cone, or a pack of cigarettes without having put down nearly as much as you would have across the parking lot…and it tastes better too.
