Kate’s Joint, Vegetarian for the Meat-Minded
I’m not proud, but I experimented with some crazy-ass stuff in college; the #1 most insane being vegetarianism. Fortunately, it only lasted about 4 days and then I quickly made up for lost protein with a turkey/chicken/ham sandwich. Yes, I admit I love a good veggie burger but being a full-time veggie is right up there with wearing man jewelry on my dating no-no list, so just keep that in mind when you think about the fact I chose to use these keystrokes on vegetarian restaurant Kate’s Joint.
Just so everyone’s clear, I totally didn’t realize this place was vegetarian until I was sitting down. I saw a sign outside listing the two things I was craving at that hungover moment: a $2 PBR and Mac and Cheese. Both were so excellent that I returned another time for their brunch special, which is $10.95 for an entree, coffee/tea, and a cocktail. I got the Breakfast Burrito–organic eggs (or tofu scramble if you’re into that kind of thing), black beans, cheddar cheese, and salsa served with salad and hash browns–and the Huevos Rancheros and Banana & Walnut Whole Wheat pancakes looked good too.
Overall, the menu has a Southern-feel with dishes dressed up in BBQ and Buffalo sauces with sides of starchy favorites like mashed potatoes and fries. There’s usually a good drink special going on no matter what night too, so overall it’s a joint you can enjoy without meat and all.
