EDM DJ & Composer To Play With The SF Symphony Orchestra

Calling all EMD and Classical music fans; composer and DJ Mason Bates joins the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and guest conductor Pablo Heras-Casado to bring us Auditorium, an electro-acoustic soundscape that unites two incredible methods of making music.  Portions of the performance contain sounds from Nasa’s first space walk, another has beats from early Detroit techno, all of which are supported by the full force of the orchestra. Playing April 27th- 29th info here

This is a one of a kind series, something that the modern classical aficionado can enjoy all the way down to the biggest EDM freak.  Mason Bates or DJ Masonic has spun EDM everywhere from The Mezzanine in SF to The Metro in Chicago, check out his ‘post classical’ rave sets at Mercury Soul.  The SF Symphony is offering tickets starting at just $15 to experience this in person at select shows!

Here is what composer & DJ Mason Bates had to say about the music (Auditorium) he recorded with the SF Symphony Orchestra and will perform April 27-29th.

“This work is quite different from anything I’ve done before. The piece takes the premise that an orchestra, like a person, can be haunted. Ghostly remixed recordings of period instruments trail the live orchestra, with riffs being passed across the void like on a giant Ouija board. What begins as a haunting evolves into a kind of ‘techno bourée,’ with the two musical entities reaching an ethereal resolution.” – Mason Bates

Conducted by Pablo Heras-Casado, Russian nationalism meets a delightful flurry of energy and spirit in Shostakovich’s Ninth Symphony alongside Bartók’s Dance Suite and Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin. The program is completed with a San Francisco Symphony Commission and world premiere of Mason Bates’ Auditorium.
