EDD Site Crashes as CA Self-Employed Try to File

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

California Self-employed, independent contractors, & ‘gig’ workers can finally apply for unemployment, as of today April 28th.  But, as of 10 AM today, the EDD has crashed for many.

This reporter has been trying to file since 9AM (pst) this morning.  And has not had any luck, the system simply keeps crashing.  California has an estimated 2.2 Million self-employed workers, all who have not been eligible for unemployment benefits until today.  The ‘PUA’ or Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program is accepting applications online, but we recommend waiting a bit, it will not effect your award, they back date it.

Independent contractors, gig-workers, and self employed people have been waiting since March for help from the state. Unemployment benefits have not been available to self-employed people since the pandemic started. Naturally, millions of Californians are now poor, panicked, and pissed-off. Not just because it took 2 months to offer them help, but because the EDD site keeps crashing, now at the eleventh hour, a few days from the end of the month when most citizens must pay their rent.
