Potted Potter Casts a Spell of Hilarity on San Francisco

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

If you are feeling down from a lack of Harry Potter in your life, I have some very good news for you! Potted Potter: The Unauthorized Experience- A Parody by Dan and Jeff has arrived in San Francisco’s Palace of Fine Arts Theater. It is sure to delight muggles, witches, and wizards alike. This slapstick parody of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter novels is a non-stop 70 minutes of fun. There will be terrible wigs, an unimpressive dragon, a delightful game of Quidditch and a whole lot of laughter.

If you look very hard there is a plot(ish). Scott (Scott Hoatson) wants to put on a Broadway-style production of every Harry Potter book. He hires his friend Joe (Joseph Maudsley) to find actors, props, and a set. Joe confesses that he has done none of these things because he has spent all the money on an animatronic dragon. As a result, the actors decide to act out a two-man version of the entire series. Scott takes on the role of Harry Potter.  Joe plays all the other characters (there are over 300). Improv becomes an essential part of this production as the two respond to the audience and keep them all engaged.

This is a very kid-friendly show and they can be heard roaring with laughter from start to finish. The humor and audience participation is perfectly suited to this age group. Potted Potter does rely heavily on knowledge of the Harry Potter Books. If you are a fan then this lighthearted show is definitely for you.

The set by Simon Scullion is a mishmash of children’s book references. The wardrobe from Narnia sits center stage and is utilized as a projection screen and as a blind for the actors to change behind. The two appear in an impressive amount of silly wigs and hats. An epic wrestling match between Voldemort and Harry (which incidentally never happened in book four) shows off the clever lighting by Tim Mascall. All in all, Potted Potter proved itself to be an engaging and well-crafted production. It will play through January 7th.
