Should we talk less shit about Marin County? No, but hear me out:

A recent study has placed Northern California firmly in the spotlight for its charitable generosity, with six Bay Area counties ranking among the top 10 most giving in the state. The analysis, conducted by financial technology firm SmartAsset, shows Marin, San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Contra Costa counties leading the charge in charitable donations, taking the top four spots in California.

San Francisco County also made the list at seventh place, with Alameda County rounding out the top ten. The study examined donations as a percentage of net income and the proportion of residents making charitable contributions. It revealed that Californians, on average, allocate around 1.23% of their income to charity, with only 9.28% of income tax returns itemizing these contributions.

San Mateo County topped the rankings for the highest donation rate relative to income, with contributions averaging 3.5% of residents’ income from itemized tax returns. San Francisco and Santa Clara counties followed closely, with each contributing 3.2% of income.

Marin County emerged as the state’s most generous county, with 23.5% of its 130,000-plus tax returns itemizing charitable donations. San Mateo County came in second at 18%, while Contra Costa County secured third place with 17.9%.

A 2023 report underscored that Northern Californians outstrip their Southern counterparts in charitable giving. San Francisco ZIP code 94104, between Chinatown and the Financial District, recorded the highest donation rate, with residents giving 17.6% of their adjusted gross income. Palo Alto’s ZIP code 94301 and nearby 94304 also ranked high, with residents contributing 12.9% and other notable percentages, respectively.

Despite its reputation for wealth and philanthropy, the Bay Area grapples with stark economic inequality and underfunded nonprofits, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The National Center for Family Philanthropy highlights this duality, noting the area’s prosperity amid growing economic disparities.

Either way, shout out to Marin County.
