Can It Be? A Sports Bar in Greenpoint? Yes. It’s Red Star.
Last Sunday, I was doing a typical Brooklyn-y thing to do by enjoying the neighborhood’s Open Studios weekend, which came to a halt shortly after walking around a man’s apartment while he created a “live soundtrack” by making odd sounds into a microphone. I was instantly struck by thoughts of what the Midwestern in me would rather be doing… growing corn, of course! No, no, that’s not right. Oh, yes, it was the other thing we do… watching football!
I’ve had a hard time finding a place in either Greenpoint or Williamsburg to serve my fall sports package needs, which is why when I recently heard the not-so-gentle shouts of fellow sports fans coming from Red Star bar I was intrigued. I got closer, slightly nervous in case they were Jets fans (ugh, they were) and…and… IT WAS INDEED A GENUINE SPORTS BAR. Complete with pitchers, 18 draft beers, deliciously bad-for-you bar food, and even karaoke on Thursdays. What do you know, there is a god!
I soon learned on Mondays they offer $1 sliders, $3 drafts and a chance to win $10,000 that I don’t fully understand the details on, Thursdays they offer up a complete BBQ meal for $6, and on Saturdays and Sunday nights I can eat something called a “cool ranch hot dog” and wash it down with a $10 pitcher while watching my beloved Buckeyes or Patriots. Guys, I cannot tell you how excited this makes me. Yes, mostly because now I don’t have to go to the UES for these kinds of gluttonous delicacies but also because it’s all just so… normal. And for me, I can use as much as that as possible, especially when sidewalks are filled with mattresses marked “Bed Bugs!” and there are people inviting me into their homes to listen to their “live soundtracks.”
So, see you there, yeah? I’ll be the one with the pile of cool ranch hot dogs.
