On Saturday, I biked from Williamsburg to the Intrepid, and I had to run through a nearby fountain as soon as I got to the boat so I could stop feeling like my skin was on fire. Even if you’re not doing cardio exercises outside, New York is approaching that special time a year when you want to take a second shower as soon as you step outside. Your job may get in the way of your urge to jump into a vat of cold water during the day, but you can distract yourself with Underwater New York’s afternoon of water-inspired stories at Bryant Park’s Word for Word series.
Underwater New York is an online collection of stories, art and music inspired by underwater objects and themes in the city. Contributions are about everything from old Coney Island theme parks to plastic mouse figurines. Today’s reading features Jennifer Egan, Ed Park, Nelly Reifler, Said Sayrafiezadeh, Deb Olin Unferth and music by Michael Hearst. And in a city that has a bay named after horseheads, the water promises to be be a never-ending source of material for awesome stories.
