BAS Pride 2016: Pink Saturday, SF Dyke March, AB Soto & the Spice Queers, and Afterglow! 6/25

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Pride 2016 may be one of the most important in recent memory. Out of the tragedy of Orlando, a wave of solidarity has spread across the world and it has galvanized our community to respond with love, to speak out against our culture of violence, stand with our Latinx, Muslim, and poc brothers and sisters, and be as fucking queer as possible.

Every year there is hardly a dearth of things to do during the high holy days of Pride Week, but it’s all the more so this year! Be sure to check in here at BAS for events, exhibitions and actions every day this week and we’ll do our best to keep you in the big gay loop! Also be sure to look for our annual Pride retrospective photo spread next week to catch all the looks and lovin’. Happy Holigays, jotos!!!

Well, SF Pride 2016 is changing by the minute. As we updated readers yesterday, several grand marshals have withdrawn from the parade, For Racial & Economic Justice, in response to the increased presence of the violence-riddled SFPD, amongst them, Black Lives Matter, Janetta Johnson, and the St. James Infirmary.

This doesn’t mean, however, that the city has tried to stem the exodus by finding alternatives. This was all the more driven home when the tone deaf and disconnected Mayor Lee and Supervisor Scott Weiner showed up on stage at the Trans March at got summarily booed and heckled off the stage along with Mark Leno.

There are some positive about faces to be happy about though. The 24th Annual San Francisco Dyke March: #stillherestillqueer is kicking-off with its daytime festivities followed by the march despite the fact that the San Francisco Department of Recreation & Parks had tried to evict them from Dolores like they had the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.

Also being resurrected at the eleventh hour is Pink Saturday, albeit not quite in it’s original form, but perhaps in spirit. The Sisters have rightly decided to take back ownership over the event, but have moved it to the parking lot across the street from the Eagle on the border of the Mission and South of Market. No doubt thousands of tourists will descend upon the Castro on Saturday regardless.

If, you’re still scrambling for Pride party looks, tip-toe down to Sui Generis Consignment as that they are offering 20% off your first purchase and a curated styling to boot. These handsome gents know their threads and usually have niceties like champagne on hand to assuage your fashion anxiety.

If this selection feels a little too buttoned-up, however, you can always jump across town to South of Market and peruse all the jock straps, singlets and latex you’d like at Mr. S Leather’s Pride Jockstrap Party. Go-go boys will be gyrating to DJ Ken Vulsion’s every beat and if you wear one of your own jocks, you just might get a free treat to take home with you.

Also downtown, the heavily guarded Pride Festival is already in full swing. Saturday headliners will be chunty realness maven, AB Soto followed by drag juggernaut, the Spice Queers. If you’re in the splash zone, you probably won’t have to pick up any supplies from Kryolan to get that glitterbeard look you’ve been dreaming of.

absoto-1

If your still jonesing for some frolic after all that and wondering what to do as the sun goes down on the bay, Comfort & Joy wanted to let die-hard revelers know that whereas Afterglow: It Takes A Village, People is sold out, there’s a big exodus after 2 a.m., so you might want to swing by and check things out around then. After all, there will be four more hours of sexy, day-glow fun.

Stephen's early years were spent in a boxcar overlooking downtown Los Angeles. From there he moved around the state with his family before settling under the warm blanket of smog that covers suburban Southern California. Moving around led to his inability to stay in one place for very long, but San Francisco has been reeling him back in with its siren song since 1999.
By trade he pours booze, but likes to think he can write and does so occasionally for the SF Bay Guardian, Bold Italic and 7x7. He also likes to enjoy time spent in old eateries, bars and businesses that, by most standards, would have been condemned a long time ago.
