Old School Hobbies That Are Making a Comeback
In this day and age of social media and being so busy it makes our heads spin, it’s nice to see that certain hobbies, which were once a thing of the past, are finally making a comeback. As a society, we are stressed out beyond belief. Taking the time to unwind and challenge ourselves by taking up a new “old school” hobby is just what the doctor ordered.
Here are a few hobbies that are — thankfully — coming back around.
Gardening
The art of planting and growing flowers, trees, plants, fruits, vegetables and other foliage has become a popular hobby again. Not only is it a relaxing activity, it is good for your health. It enhances your mood, provides you with physical exercise, helps you stay focused and makes your diet better. Even having a small herb garden can make you feel good and accomplished.
People are becoming more and more health conscious these days, so they are cultivating their own fruit and vegetable gardens. It doesn’t get more organic than that.
Gardening takes planning, which is just part of this great hobby. Once you have a plan in place, it’s time to get your hands dirty. That’s when the fun really begins.
Writing
This has always been a popular hobby. It has remained popular through people self-publishing books and starting their own personal blogs. But there are two types of writing that are making a comeback — letter writing and journaling.
Writing letters used to be one of the only ways people could communicate, and once cellular phones were invented, it went through the window. Having a pen pal is becoming a desired hobby again, and the benefits are numerous.
Journaling is another type of writing that has great benefits and is making a comeback. The number of people in the world with mental health disorders is continually rising. Anxiety itself affects 18% of the U.S. population. It’s no wonder journaling has become popular again. Journaling is an incredibly therapeutic hobby that can help in healing and relieving stress.
Collecting
People collect all sorts of things, from cards to typewriters — but collecting had become less popular. Now it’s making a comeback.
A hobby that is becoming more common again is stamp collecting, also known as philately. The internet has made stamp collecting easier, as collectors are able to get in touch with one another much quicker. There has also been a boom in the Asian market, which has led to more stamp collecting.
Another item people are collecting again is coins. Coins date back to 650 B.C., making this one of the oldest hobbies known to man. Coin collecting is a hobby for several reasons, but mainly because of the historical stories they tell as well as their ability to appreciate over time. They can also be rare and a challenge to find.
Knitting
Knitting is the exercise of using two needles and yarn to create textile items such as blankets, accessories, and clothing. This hobby also has a plethora of health benefits. Like meditation, it helps you to be mindful and relax. it gives you a sense of pride because you are creating something with your own two hands. It even helps to alleviate anxiety, stress and depression symptoms.
It can even be a social event. Knitting groups are becoming more and more popular. But you can also do it while you’re having a nice, relaxing evening in while watching TV or a movie. You can knit anywhere really — even on an airplane.
Calligraphy
Calligraphy is the art of decorative handwriting. It is another hobby that comes with great benefits. Calligraphy is an enjoyable hobby that people do for fun, but it also good for mental health as it takes concentration to build the skill.
Baking
The history of baking dates back to the Middle Ages, and it has remained popular ever since. But in our modern time, when you can get baked goods out of a vending machine, it makes sense that people stopped baking from scratch for a while. This hobby is making a comeback though — and it has been for a few years now.
Baking is enjoyable for many reasons. It is relaxing and serves as a creative outlet, plus you can make some really tasty things and share them with your loved ones. Now that’s a win all the way around.
These are just a handful of the old-school hobbies that are making a comeback. Something tells me, as we grow tired of our overly busy, social media-filled lives, we will bring back many more enjoyable and challenging hobbies over time.
