We’ve got more concerts and parties than I’ve seen in more than a year – maybe even more than we saw pre-pandemic – and all kinds of fun ways to learn, grow, and engage with all the wonderful and weird that The Bay as to offer. Whatever your wish, we’ve got something for you this week – and don’t forget to browse the whole calendar of events, because there’s way more awesome stuff going on than I can fit into this newsletter! Regardless though, here’s what we’re most excited about for the week of 8/17/21…

Tuesday, 8/17
Turnover @ The Chapel
7:30 pm | The Chapel, 777 Valencia Street | $35
Turnover’s newest album, Altogether, was written by the band while they were on opposite coasts. Though separated by space and circumstances, the result is the band’s “most collaborative and connected work to date.” See them perform it live tonight at one of SF’s best outdoor stages!
Fun Garten

Every Tuesday evening, Mission Bay becomes home to the funniest & most unique comedians as seen on Netflix, Sketchfest, & Viceland. Dress warmly – the whole show is outdoors. There’ll also be a mix of eclectic food trucks and tasty beverages!

Queens at the Crossroads with Susan Stryker

One hot August night in 1966, a drag queen under duress from police harassment threw a hot cup of coffee at an officer, setting off a seminal act of militant queer resistance now known as The Compton’s Cafeteria Riot. Celebrate the Riot’s anniversary month by joining author Susan Stryker for a film screening and lecture previewing her forthcoming publication, “At the Crossroads of Turk and Taylor: Re-Membering Legacies of Opposition to Carceral Power in San Francisco’s Tenderloin District.”
Gray Area’s Artist Showcase Opening Night
7:00 pm | Gray Area, 2665 Mission Street | $5-25
Following the successful opening of Gray Area’s virtual art gallery, the in-person Artist Showcase opening will premiere artworks which critically explore machine learning, glitch, and digital ontology. Works range from a 3D environmental interactive music video to hyperobject photogrammetry, and are custom-made for the space’s 360-degree CineChamber.
Thursday, 8/19
Balto w/ The Live Oaks + Tay and the Jangladahs
Doors at 7:30 pm, show at 8:30 pm | The Cornerstone, 2367 Shattuck Avenue, Berkeley | $12-14
Balto’s style of rock n’ roll is described as, “a boozy, swaggering style of American music rooted at the intersection of Motown, Big Star, Plastic Ono Band-era Lennon, and Jackson Browne” – a winning combo indeed! Check them out live in concert tonight with Americana-soul band The Live Oaks, plus folk-psych quartet Tay and the Jangladahs.
Retra + Pretty Frankenstein
8:30 pm – 11:00 pm | The New Parish, 1743 San Pablo Avenue, Oakland | $10
Without knowing anything about either of these bands, I already know they’re my new favorites. Queer/women-fronted Retra promises “powerful anthems, glitzy fashion, and gender-bending theatrics,” while queer/nonbinary/POC-fronted Pretty Frankenstein describes themselves as “if Divine from Pink Flamingos and Nick Cave had a strange love child that liked to rap every once in a while.” DO NOT sleep on your chance to snag tickets!
Oscar Myers’ Steppin
Show at 9:00 pm | The Boom Boom Room, 1601 Fillmore Street | $0-10 (free admission before 8:00 pm)
Oscar Myers is a Fillmore Legend, a world-renowned musician and arranger who has performed with a who’s who of RnB, Soul, Blues, Jazz and Funk greats over his five-decade career. Myers’s band, Steppin, is an Old-school Boogaloo, Dirty-Soul Funk Collective that combines Stylin, up-tempo grooves, non-stop rhythms, nasty Funky Dance breaks, James Brown vocals, and big party flavor! And DJ Kevvy Kev will be there too, so get ready to break it down HARD!
Friday, 8/20
Picnic on Telegraph

Discover Temescal outdoors! Spend the afternoon and evening walking, shopping, and dining out, all while supporting Temescal businesses. Enjoy expanded outdoor seating, new parklets, free fitness demos, and sidewalk sales on the newly repaved Telegraph Avenue, and relish in some safe and socially distanced time outdoors while exploring over 12 blocks of Telegraph. (Yes it’s outdoors, but bring that mask anyway!)
Daddy Saddle

Feeling lately like you really need a big hug from a big man? Daddy Saddle is the dance party where you may just get it (with consent, obviously). DJs Tuna, Tamale, and Jimmy Swear will be spinning tunes to keep you grooving all night, so GET THAT VAXX so you can dance the night away in someone’s warm embrace.

Eidolon Vessel Closing Reception and Workshop

As Lauren Ys’ largest solo exhibition to date comes to an end, come and engage with the work on a deeper level. A Chinese Knot Threading workshop will be held in the afternoon (register to reserve your spot!) to give you a deeper intimacy with the creations and the cultural influences that formed them. Later that evening, join the artist for a closing reception at which Ys’ new book and several prints will be released for purchase.
Zen and the Art of Urban Sketching
12:00 pm | Fort Mason Center, Corner of Buchanan Street and Marina Street | $30-60
Join local artist and art entrepreneur Zip Lehnus at FLAX Art + Design Store for this in-person, socially distanced, outdoor workshop. The workshops begin at FLAX, where participants pick up their urban sketching kit (included in the class fee), go over basic urban sketching techniques, and set off to discover beautiful outdoor settings perfect for urban sketching. The $60 class fee includes everything needed to jump-start a passion for urban sketching (more than $45.00 worth of art supplies!), but returning students who already have supplies can attend for $30.
Palace of Trash presents: Phoenix Rising

They’re baaaack! Palace of Trash returns from the ashes of the pandemic with Phoenix Rising, a show about rebirth, new beginnings and rising up after upheaval. Join them for a night of immortal drag, and give yourself permission to resurrect yourself.
SF Opera presents: Tosca

Love, lust, intrigue, corruption, jealousy, and power converge in this passionate political thriller by Puccini. Bugs Bunny ain’t got nothin’ on this production of the Italian classic, conducted by Eun Sun Kim and starring Ailyn Perez.

Mission District Culinary Journey
