You know them. You love them. You get excited every time you see them. Yup, it’s the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, the drag queen, nun, activists who’ve been using campy humor to spread the word about important causes for over 40 years!

While these “Dragtavists” got started in advocacy during the AIDS epidemic, they’ve continued to champion many causes over the years. The Sisters just launched their newest effort called “Safety First, Sexy Second” and it’s campaign to help people navigate hookups safely, no matter where they meet.

“Tragically, there has been a rise in hate crimes against gay men, queer, and trans people right here in San Francisco and around the country,” says Sister Roma, who devised the campaign with her Sister Shalita Corndog. “Our community has always looked out for one another, and this campaign is all about that tradition.” Sister Shalita adds, “The Sisters Care! We want everyone to have fun, explore freely, and feel sexy—but also make sure they’re taking steps to stay safe and be smart about their hookups.”

The campaign lays out a 3-Step Plan for people to hookup safer:

1. Buddy-Up: Choose a trusted friend to be your safety check-in; send screenshots of who you’re meeting and share your location.

2. Hookup: Be your sexy self and have fun.

3. Follow Up: Set a time to check in and let your buddy know that you’re safe or if you need help.

While the target of the campaign is the LGBTQ+ community, the above plan is important for everyone to use while getting it on with a new person or a stranger.
