Swaying Palms and $3 Glory Hole at the Dore Alley Fair Sunday, 7/28
Here’s the story, Dore Glory.
Well summer is about halfway through, which in this town means two things. One is that our warm spells will actually increase in length and frequency, and the other is that queer street fair season is nigh, beginning with the raunch and rank Up Your Alley Fair on the corner of Dore and Folsom. Dore Alley was my initial San Francisco street fair and nothing quite makes a first impression , nor screams, “Welcome to San Francisco, you big homo!”, like walking into an alley lined entirely in blowjobs with whips cracking in the background. So if you’re a little squeamish about sex al fresco, you may want to hold out for the Castro Street Fair.
In reality, though, the fair seems to have mellowed to tamer roar in recent years. Dore Street, for one, is now lined in condos and pretty palm trees as opposed to leather and sunburned penises more often than not. One new addition on the alley, however, is lending the festivities “a hand”, if you will.
The freshly opened Tank 18 sits on the Harrison side of Dore, but is not allowing technicalities to stand in the way of a good time. Mediator of musty men folk gatherings, Walter Gómez, is partnering with the bar to produce the delicately titled Glory Hole. There will be dj sets, burlesque, drags, and a full bar of stiff spirits to loosen up even the tightest and send you slipping sloppily back down the alley from whence you came.
You might want to go with something wash-and-wear today. Just a thought.
