Recession Busting Basics at the American Apparel Flea Market!

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

There is something to be said for a basic t-shirt. We spend our lives looking for the perfect fit. We steal them from boyfriends and best friends, wear them until they beg for mercy and customize them to the point of designer-ware overload. From the simple white crew neck to go with bermuda shorts and slip ons in the summer, to the black v-neck that tops the jeans that have seen the underbelly of the city too many times, we covet the t-shirt in a way that only American culture can — and we’re on the verge of obsession.

Luckily, the people at American Apparel do their job well. Say what you will about their business practices, price range and work force; they produce a damn fine product that keeps people of all ages a slave to the namesake.

Also, luckily for me, my student council is finally using some of the $2.5 million dollar budget its vetted despite class and pay cuts to finally do something productive for a change. Come on down to my campus on Tuesday and check out what their flea market has for sale. They’re taking over the entire student center and its sure to be one hell of a mad dash for that last dangerously low v-neck with nothing over $15. You can bet your sweet ass I’ll be missing class and shoving the best of them to get some cotton that I’m sure will be in my wardrobe for some time to come.

Monica Miller - The Intern

Ms. Miller was born in San Diego, CA to one lesbian mother and one
righteous, cheap father. Currently, she is enrolled at San Francisco
State University for a B.A. in Journalism and the approximate
completion date is around 2015. She has worked for many papers in the
Bay Area, including the Oakland Tribune and the San Mateo Country
Times and is currently the city editor at one of the most
underappreciated publications in SF, the Golden Gate [X]press. Though
she may find bargains aplenty, it only stems from the necessity of
never landing an actual job and working for hacks [like Stuart.] With
intelligence, style, poise, bite, and honesty, she will rip your heart
out; but not before writing some awesome, poignant shit. This year,
she is looking forward to bigger and better things such as: trying to
get paid for a gig, actually finding a date that isn't a loser or
fucking crazy, not calling her parents when hungover and bringing you
the best of the 7x7 everyday of the week. [By the way, I wasn't
kidding about the date thing; if you love food, booze and shoegaze,
get at me.]
