Come to SHAKEOUTTTTTT 3: The Sea Giveth, The Sea Taketh Away
Laura S - Spendthrift Scribe 2010-07-24Well as the cheesy weatherman on TV say, it’s another “scorcher” out there. Sure you could go to the movies, maybe a museum to escape the heat, but why not take advantage of New York’s short but sweet beach season and get your ass over to Far Rockaway for some fish tacos and a little “culture”.
A group of 30 or so local artists are taking over a marina in Rockaway and transforming it into a giant outdoor exhibition. SHAKEOUTTTTTT 3: The Sea Giveth, The Sea Taketh Away or (S3TSGTSTA) for short, gave these artists the opportunity to basically take over old junk boats and do what they pleased with them. Some were painted, one became a haunted house, another a music recording studio for the band Messages, and another will be showing video projections complete with a “disco lounge” on the upper deck. There will also be an interactive sound sculpture floating on a dock. I’m not sure what that means, but I’m sure I’ll find out soon enough.
Once you get your culture fix, enjoy so more leisurely summer activities like eating Italian ice from DiCosmo’s and downing cold refreshments from Williamsburg’s local spot, Zablozki’s. DJ’s Taka and Shay High will be spinning music all day, and if you want to get out on the water, there will be kayak and motor boat hourly rentals all day. If you really want to get your feet wet, there will be a swimming dock, where you can check out additional floating sculptures along the way. Also check out a performance by Brooklyn’s post-punk Lemonade while you snack on local foodie favs. Rocaway Tacos, Roberta’s Pizza and Veggie Island.
To reach the madness, you can either hop on the downtown A train, to 60th St, or catch the water taxi at Pier 11 at Wall St. I wanted to find a picture of crazy house boats and old Italian women in bikinis but that scenic shot will have to do.
