Tonight! Shh, It’s the Secret Secretaries
Within the past year, locals The Secret Secretaries have gone from “What’s so secret about ’em?” to “punk-styled ‘lit rock’… musically virtuosic… pure poetry” (Charles Kruger). Remain at Cafe du Nord after the group’s set tonight for the Quiet Lightning Reading Series, and you’ll have yourself a seriously cerebral night out.
Self-released debut album Birthmarked garnered The Secret Secretaries comparisons to NYC art rock, garage rock, and power pop. Following that is Quiet Lightning, a monthly, submission-based reading series. Apparently the submitters submit anything they want — diary entries, rants and raves, slam poetry, short stories. The chosen ones are read in a specific order designed to evoke a mix tape aesthetic. These submissions also end up in sPARKLE & bLINK, a book that will be sold at the show and online.
So there’s a lot going on in one place tonight, and it’s totally worth the measly amount of money they’re asking.
