Oakland Art Murmur: As Good (And Cheap) As It Gets

Updated: Aug 03, 2012 16:37
The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

The first Friday of every month has Oakland displaying the very best it has to offer; art, crafts, live music, food, and a city full of fun, diverse, and interesting people. Oakland Art Murmur is a city-wide multi-venue event that supports the burgeoning network of art and culture in this vibrant city.

Whether your thing is paintings and sculpture, hand crafted jewelry, banjo-playing buskers on street corners or any style of delectable and eclectic food served out of trucks, Oakland Art Murmur is not to be missed.

Pick almost any neighborhood and you will find a plethora of fun and FREE functions within walking distance from each other. Downtown offers the heart of Murmur. The 25th block between Telegraph and Broadway will keep you occupied with much to see at Oakopolis, Vessel Gallery, FM Oakland, and Slate Contemporary to name a few.

Old Oakland has seen a recent rebirth thanks to popuphood, a small business haven that is revitalizing a once vacant section of town one block at a time. It’s a veritable artist’s block party on Ninth St. between Broadway and Washington that includes food trucks, dj’s, and the best kimchee hot dog (by donation only) you’ve ever had outside of Crown Nine, a jewelry and designer collective that displays the work of a different local artist every Art Murmur.

Mark your calendar. The first Friday of every month in Oakland offers so much to do, see and eat; it would take years to experience it all. I’m still working on it, and relish in the new-ness and the cheap-ness of such a community event every time I go.

I'm a very simple gal. Music, books, beer, trees and friends. I like to check stuff out, check people out, check out new food and drink, and put it all down on paper. I live in Oakland and think it's a damn fine city. Won't you come and check it out?
