Flock to Hardly Strictly For This Rare Bird (Puppet) Performance

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

If you’re a music lover like myself, then this weekend is one of the year’s most exciting events: Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival (known simply as Hardly Strictly or HSB). Golden Gate Park will be transformed into a FREE music festival this weekend, September 29th through October 1st. Yet, amidst this musical extravaganza, the performance that truly stands out as the most hilarious, fun, creative and unexpected is none other than “Rare Birds” by Raining Chainsaw Projects. Their performance is set to enthrall the audience on Sunday (at 11:40 a.m) and it’s bound to be the park’s most unique and exciting event.

We’ve highlighted Raining Chainsaw’s before when we talked about Richie Rhombus’ Variety Show, Fun Stuff. What I didn’t tell you was that Raining Chainsaws is also known to host human sized puppet shows using puppets designed by Paul Hayes. In fact, when you go into their space you see these inventive puppets peppered around the space almost like they are additional guests enjoying the same event you are. Made of foam zip ties and many oddities sourced from local art resource SCRAP, these puppets are full of creativity, whimsy, and sheer imagination.

What is “Rare Birds” by Raining Chainsaws?

“Rare Birds” is part puppet show, part musical performance and all interactive. Don’t expect yourself to watch and just stare. I expect you’ll want to join in on the fun. Hardly Strictly’s distinctive Raining Chainsaws spectacle will showcase their one-of-a-kind San Francisco giant rare bird puppets and vibrant avian companions, accompanied by a talented ensemble of musicians. Marvel at the silliness, the talent, the beauty of the puppets while you enjoy music from several local musicians: Emily Zisman, Rob Reich, Shawn Miller, Barry Stock and Cory Wright.

As an extra bonus, you can enjoy the electrifying Taiko drummers of Maikaze Daiko, under the guidance of Artistic Director Bruce “Mui” Ghent, whose performances are sure to leave your heart pounding with excitement.

The Raining Chainsaw’s Team wants you to be part of the fun!

“Want to join in on the fun? HSB and Raining Chainsaws invites YOU to be a part of the show by donning your finest bird costumes to join the flock for a joyous bird dance party at the conclusion of our set. Festival opens at 9AM, only early birds get our worms! Kwack!!”

While other kids were attending summer camp & soccer practice, she was raised selling wares at craft shows with her working artist parents and spent vacations in a small 1920s Montana log cabin.
