Cage Heat: Nicholas Cage Night at IFC Theater
I blame my Mother and her exposing me the movie Moonstruck. That’s where the love of the “Cagemaster”, as I will now be calling him, began. Although that movie is cheesier than a 7 layer lasagna in Little Italy, he’s definitely not your typical romantic leading man. Known equally for the great parts he’s played and all the B movies in between, you definitely can’t typecast Nicholas Cage. Although I do think he’s got “action movie with a weird plot line” market covered. You almost forget how large his body of work actually is. Wink Wink. With over 60 films to his name, I’m sure it was hard to pick which one’s to include in the IFC Center’s tribute marathon to him.
From April 23 to July 10, IFC will be playing a different Nicholas Cage movie every Friday at midnight. Highlights include David Lynch’s Wild at Heart, Valley Girl, Raising Arizona, and my personal favorite Peggy Sue Got Married. While I’m a little disappointed there’s no Matchstick Men or Adaptation, I think they got his more serious body of work covered. Who knows, I might throw a little marathon of my own, maybe some National Treasure or his criminally underrated Alien/Apocalyptic film, “Next”.
No matter how many bad wigs he wears or pairs of Ben Franklin’s glasses he uncovers, I just can’t deny the appeal of those big brown eyes. I can think of worse ways to spend a Friday night then some Cage and maybe a little Red Bamboo beforehand? Until then I will just anxiously await the Ghost Rider sequel, Spirit of Vengeance.
