Fritos and Champagne — FREE Art Opening Tonight at Adobe Books

There’s really just nothing to dislike about this art show. First, the opening reception tonight at 7pm is not only FREE to attend, but there will also be FREE food and drinks making the rounds. Second, it’s being held at one of the best used bookstores in the city, Adobe Books. You never know what you’ll find beneath the haphazard stacks of completely unalphabetized chaos: Miss Manners’ Guide to Excruciatingly Correct Behavior; a Swedish grammar book from 1902; even a homeless guy enjoying the last bits of his chocolate-filled croissant. But the real selling point is that the show is about FOOD. That’s right, FOOD. I mean, seriously, the name of the exhibit is Fritos and Champagne. How can it not be awesome?
San Francisco artist Dori Latman is presenting her show in three “courses.” Tonight is the “appetizer,” in which gouache (look it up) paintings of over 200 cookbook covers will be on display and deep, arty conversation about eating, life, and the interconnectedness of it all will abound (that’s the idea, anyway). Over the next few months, the remaining two “courses,” “dinner” and “dessert,” will make an appearance at Adobe amidst the regular installations, paralleling the social experience of sitting down at an extended meal…a very extended meal.
Btw, though there’s always FREE food/drinks at Adobe openings, you don’t have to worry that refreshments will run out and you’ll be stranded sober. This is because the greatest thing about live music, art shows or even just hanging out on the couch at Adobe on a random Tuesday night reading a $3 copy of Catcher in the Rye that you know you should just buy, but don’t, is that it’s totally cool to bring in your own booze and food. I’m talking PBR tall boys, carne asada super burritos and those powdered sugar-covered donuts you get at the gas station. Yes, that’s what I brought in last time I was here. Yes, I was still famished when I left. And yes, I later spent half an hour searching for a bacon-wrapped hot dog and demolished one with extra onions.
But like I’ve always said, a night out in the Mission that doesn’t end with a bacon-wrapped hot dog is like Christmas morning with no presents…minus the explosive bathroom trips for the next two days.
