FREE Rooftop Films: Occupy Wall Street Film Series Dec. 13th-16th
Rooftop FilmsĀ has decided to support the Occupy Wall Street movement in one of the most awesome ways possible: FREE films! From Dec. 13-16, four films featuring issues that helped ignite the movement will be shown at various theaters throughout New York. According to the Rooftop Films’ website, the series “intends to showcase film and multimedia works that provoke or continue conversations that challenge old ways of thinking and encourage new ones.”
The series kicks off on Dec. 13th at 7pm with “Just Do It”, a documentary following climate activists in the UK who used similar methods that OWS took on a few months later. It’s being shown at the Rerun Gastropub Theater in DUMBO and is billed as a “sneak preview” of the film.
After that is “Battle for Brooklyn” at the Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture on Dec. 14th. The film documents the real estate battle surrounding the building of the New Jersey Nets stadium in Brooklyn. “Battle for Brooklyn” will be followed by a Q & A session with the directors Michael Galinksy and Suki Hawley.
On Dec. 15th, “The Flaw” will be screened at the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center in Lincoln Center. “The Flaw” examines the causes and effects of the financial crisis of 2008. Mathew Modine’s short “Jesus Was a Commie”, about Jesus Christ and his political views, will run along with the film.
The series finishes up with a compilation of shorts documenting the OWS movement at Union Docs in South Williamsburg. The films have yet to be announced.
Seating for all showings is on a first-come-first-served basis. Visit Rooftop Films website for more details.
